"We already work with someone": beating the incumbent without badmouthing them
Objection Handling Playbook · August 29, 2026
What this objection really protects
Rarely loyalty. Usually it protects the prospect from switching pain: migration, retraining, renegotiation, and the political risk of admitting the current choice underdelivers. Your competition isn't the vendor — it's the effort of change. That's what you have to make small.
The treatment, step by step
- Validate the choice. "Makes sense — they're a solid tool." You've sided with the prospect's judgment, which lowers the guard.
- Ask what works. "What do you like most about the setup?" You learn the bar you have to clear — and the prospect, having praised, feels balanced enough to criticize next.
- Ask the crack question. "And if you could change one thing about it, what would it be?" Almost nobody says "nothing." The answer is your entire pitch.
- Sell into the crack only. Don't compare feature lists — position as the fix for the one thing they named. Complement beats replace: "keep them for X; we cover the Y they don't."
- Shrink the switch. Trial in parallel, one team first, no migration required. The smaller the change, the weaker the objection.
- If there's no crack, plant a seed. "Sounds like it's genuinely working — rare and great. Can I check in when the renewal comes up?" Log the date. Incumbents stumble; be the first call.
Prospect: "We're already using another platform for this."
Rep: "Good choice — it's a solid tool. Out of curiosity, if you could change one thing about how it works for your team, what would it be?"
Prospect: "Honestly? The reps never look at it after the call."
Rep: "That's exactly the gap we live in — we work during the call, not after it."
FAQ
Should I compare my product to the incumbent feature by feature?
No — a feature-table duel invites the prospect to defend their choice. Sell only into the crack they named. One real pain you fix beats ten features they didn't ask about.
What if the prospect is truly happy with their vendor?
Accept it, ask permission to check in at renewal time, and log the date. A graceful exit today is what makes you the first call when the incumbent stumbles.
How does Objeq handle the incumbent objection live?
It detects the pattern and whispers the crack question — steering the rep away from the instinctive (and fatal) competitor takedown in the heat of the moment.
Handle it live, not in the postmortem
Reading about objections is training. Handling them is a live skill under pressure — which is why Objeq whispers the treatment to your rep during the call, in under a second, visible only to them. See pricing or how it compares to Gong.
