"I need to run this by my boss": stop selling to messengers
Objection Handling Playbook · August 31, 2026
Why deals die in the retelling
Your contact heard forty minutes of context and felt the demo. The boss gets ninety seconds of summary, secondhand pricing, and none of the conviction. The objections the boss raises get answered by someone who can't answer them. You didn't lose to a competitor — you lost to compression.
The treatment, step by step
- Welcome it. "Great — that means this is real enough to escalate." No trace of frustration; your contact is about to become your champion, or your bottleneck.
- Map the decision. "So I understand the process — is it your boss's call, or a joint decision? Anyone else weigh in?" You're learning the real org chart, which is never the official one.
- Ask the proxy question. "What do you think will matter most to them — the cost, the risk, or the results?" Now the champion is rehearsing the pitch with you, and you hear where it's weak.
- Arm the champion. Build the one-pager for the boss's actual concern. Give exact numbers and answers to the three objections you predict — secondhand pitches fail on improvised answers.
- Ask for the room. "Want me to join for ten minutes? You shouldn't have to defend pricing you didn't set." Half say yes — and show-up deals close at multiples of courier deals.
- If you can't be there, schedule the debrief before the pitch happens. "When are you talking? I'll call you right after." The follow-up has a date before the meeting does.
Prospect: "I like it, but I have to run it by my partner."
Rep: "Of course. What do you think will matter most to them?"
Prospect: "She'll ask what happens if the team doesn't adopt it."
Rep: "Then let's answer that properly — want me to join for ten minutes so she hears the adoption plan firsthand?"
FAQ
Isn't asking to join the boss conversation too pushy?
Framed as service, no: 'you shouldn't have to defend numbers you didn't make up' positions you as backup, not surveillance. The worst case is a no — and the champion still leaves better armed.
How do I avoid this objection in the first place?
Qualify authority early and gently: 'if this ends up being a fit, how does a decision like this usually get made on your side?' Asked as process curiosity, it maps the chart without challenging anyone's status.
How does Objeq help with the authority objection live?
It hears the deferral and whispers the proxy question and the seat ask — turning what usually becomes 'okay, let me know!' into a champion-arming move, in the moment.
Handle it live, not in the postmortem
Reading about objections is training. Handling them is a live skill under pressure — which is why Objeq whispers the treatment to your rep during the call, in under a second, visible only to them. See pricing or how it compares to Gong.
